Childrens Luggage Competitions – New Security Concerns |
|
August 21, 2005 By: Max King Childrens Luggage Competitions – New Security ConcernsThe National Engineering Design Challenge, held in Hauppauge, saw four teams from Smithtown High School compete to design and build luggage that would pass easily through security checkpoints, contain no places to hide dangerous objects and maintain a traveler's privacy. Smithtown's teams took the challenge and applied what they are learning in the classroom in practical situations. One team, the "United Suitcase Association", designed mesh pouches that look opaque from a distance but are transparent up close, to facilitate the passage through security checkpoints, yet maintain privacy. They also included a remote locking system so nothing could be placed in the baggage after check in. Another team, " the Specialized Easy Access Luggage" team created a bag that enhanced the ability of all travelers to utilize their luggage. They also designed the outermost cover on the bag to minimize potential damage if an explosive were detonated inside it.
