Airlines and carry ons

It is important for airlines to keep their passenger compartments uncluttered and safe for their passengers. Generally all bags carried on board must be small enough to store below your seat or in the overhead compartment.

In order to limit the dimensions and number of bags a passenger can take on board with them, most airlines have developed some carry on restrictions.

The basic rule is that carry on baggage must be no taller than 22 inches, no wider than 14 inches, and no deeper than 9 inches, however many airlines also include weight restrictions.

For your convenience:

• American Airlines allows bags to be 23" x 13" x 9" with no weight restriction
• Delta allows bags to be 22" x 14" x 9" and under 40 lbs.
• Air Canada allows bags to be 9" x 15.5" x 21.5" and up to 22 lbs.
• Cathay Pacific allows bags to be 14" x 22" x 9" with an 11 lb. limit
